A Walk Through the City
- At the lagoon, one of the most significant wetlands in the Ionian, protected by the Ramsar Convention as a wetland of international importance. The area also houses an ancient fish farm (ivari).
- At the Fortress of Agia Mavra, at the entrance of the city, built by the Sicilian Giovanni Orsini in 1300.
- At the Boschetto Park, with busts of notable personalities from the island.
- On the seafront pedestrian street, filled with youthful hangouts.
In the main square, with many restaurants and cafes, where you’ll find the Saint Spyridon Church (late 17th century) featuring an interesting chancel screen and icons. From here begins the pedestrianized central shopping street (Melas Street) of the city.
In the Kouzounteli (or Kouzoumbi) area, with its centuries-old plane trees and traditional cafes serving freshly brewed coffee and homemade souma made from aromatic almonds.
At the Archaeological Museum, featuring artifacts from the Middle Paleolithic era to the 4th century AD, including findings from burial mounds in Nidri, cemeteries of the ancient city of Lefkada, and more.
At the Public Central Library, which houses a large number of publications and a rich collection of post-Byzantine icons, mainly of Ionian style, including works by Ionian painters such as Doxaras, Roussos, and others.
At the Haramogleio Special Lefkadian Library, which includes rare books, engravings, and maps, and also houses an art hall where contemporary painting and photography exhibitions are held. The collection has been included in the Guinness World Records.
At the Pantazis Kontomichis Folklore Museum, which features many notable and rare exhibits, as well as a rich collection from the daily life and occupations of the local inhabitants.
At the Phonograph and Old Memorabilia Museum, where you can find old phonographs, records, decorative antiques, old banknotes, and more.
In the Olive Grove with its ancient olive trees.
In the Great and Small Avlaimonas Wetlands, two natural fish farms near the city.
