Monemvasia
Monemvasia, known to the Franks as Malvasia, is a small historical town in eastern Peloponnese, in the Municipality of Monemvasia, in the Laconia region. It is most famous for the medieval fortress on the eponymous “Rock of Monemvasia.” Monemvasia is connected to the rest of mainland Peloponnese by a naturally formed causeway that is 400 meters long. Geophysically, it is a tombolo. In 1890, a small section of the natural tombolo was cut to build an artificial bridge to allow ships to pass through. The preserved buildings and structures within the fortress include defensive constructions of the outer castle and several small Byzantine churches.
Explore the Castle Town, which is divided into the Upper and Lower Town, and admire the well-preserved stone buildings, most of which now function as accommodations and restaurants. This means that in Monemvasia, you have the unique opportunity to stay in a medieval tower or enjoy a romantic dinner on the rooftop of a tower house!
