One of the most elegant examples of Venetian fortress architecture, and one of the few castles where houses and churches are preserved within its walls, the Castle of Koroni dominates almost the entire Akritas cape, at the southern edge of the Messinian Gulf. Built by the Venetians in the 13th century and reinforced by the Ottomans in the 16th century, it is a striking monument of historical and architectural significance.

The picturesque uphill path that begins from the harbor takes us back in time as we encounter remnants of both the Byzantine castle that predated it and the ancient fortifications. The narrow cobblestone alleys lead to the main gate of the castle on the northern side, where the entire settlement once gathered to protect itself from invaders and pirates.

Today, however, only a few houses are still inhabited. Inside the castle, one can find hewn tombs, subterranean vaulted cisterns made of cut stone blocks for rainwater collection, the octagonal tower — a sample of Ottoman architecture, the churches of Agia Sophia (a 12th-century Byzantine church) and Agios Charalambos (a former mosque now serving as an Orthodox church), as well as the Monastery of St. John the Baptist.

It is worth stopping at the castle’s plateau to admire the breathtaking view: the entire Messinian Gulf at your feet, with the snow-capped peaks of Mount Taygetus in the distance!
Located on the southwestern side of Kalavryta, just 5 kilometers from the historic town, the Holy Monastery of Agia Lavra stands as one of the region’s top attractions. A major national and religious pilgrimage site of paramount importance, it is also one of the oldest monasteries in Greek history.

Set in a majestic landscape, with Byzantine elements dominating the architecture, we are transported back in time to the era of the Byzantine Empire under Emperor Nikephoros Phokas, when the Athonite ascetic Eugenios founded the monastery, according to tradition. Despite the numerous destructions, fires, and pillages that marred its tumultuous history, the monastery rose again each time, even grander and more impressive.

The monastery’s history is forever tied to its immense contribution to the Greek War of Independence, as during the Ottoman rule it served as a center of national action.

Visitors can explore the monastery’s museum and relive its thousand-year history. The museum houses a stunning collection of treasures of incalculable national significance. Among the items on display are the sacred flag, weapons of the 1821 revolutionaries, the vestments and pastoral staff of Archbishop Germanos of Patras, the diamond-studded Gospel – a gift from Catherine the Great – the 1754 epitaph, the embroidered image of Saint George by “Kokona the Rologá”, significant religious objects, and a wealth of documents dating from 1688 to 1906.

Take a moment to rest under the ancient plane tree – a natural monument in itself – for reflection, emotion, and gratitude for this sacred Palladium of Orthodoxy. The Holy Monastery of Agia Lavra is not just a place of religious importance, but also a profound symbol of national heritage and resilience.

The Megalo Spileo Monastery is a historic and one of the most significant pilgrimage sites of Orthodoxy in Greece, located near Kalavryta. Situated ten kilometers northeast of Kalavryta, near the road connecting the National Road from Patras to Athens with Kalavryta, it is built into a large natural cave in the Helmos mountain range, above the steep gorge of the Vouraikos River, at an altitude of approximately 900 meters. It is also located close to the village of Kato Zachlorou, at a higher elevation. The monastery complex, a majestic structure with eight floors, blends harmoniously with the wild and impressive landscape of the area. The main church (Katholikon) of the monastery is carved into the rock, featuring a cross-shaped design and two narthexes. The main church contains murals from 1653, noteworthy marble mosaics on the floor, a wooden carved iconostasis, and other valuable artistic elements. The murals in the narthex date back to the early 19th century.

The monastery, considered the oldest in Greece, was founded in 362 AD by the Thessalonian monks, Symeon and Theodore. According to tradition, the two brothers saw separate visions while in Jerusalem, instructing them to travel to Achaia to find the sacred icon of the Virgin Mary, made of mastic and wax and painted by the Evangelist Luke. After several wanderings and revelatory dreams, they encountered a young shepherdess named Euphronía from the village of Galatá (Zachlorou), who led them to the cave where the sacred icon was found. The icon had been discovered by Euphronía through divine guidance and the direction of a goat from her flock that went to the cave for water from a spring there. This spring, later covered with marble, is known today as “The Maiden’s Spring,” a sacred site. The sacred icon was guarded by a fearsome dragon, which was struck by a lightning bolt when it attacked the monks attempting to clear the sacred space. The monks then constructed a small church and cells, with the help of the local people, who came to venerate the miraculous icon. Over time, the monastery became one of the most populous and prominent monastic communities and flourished greatly.

The monastery has faced numerous destructions due to fires, including in 840, 1400, 1640, and 1934, but the sacred icon was always miraculously preserved. Emperor Andronicus the Elder is said to have rebuilt the monastery in 1285 after a devastating fire. The monastery played a crucial role in the uprisings against the Turks, especially during the 1770 uprising, when the abbot of the monastery intervened to end a siege of Kalavryta, ensuring the safety of Turkish families. During the Greek War of Independence in 1821, the monastery was a symbol of Orthodoxy and resistance, never being captured despite several attacks, notably repelling the forces of Ibrahim Pasha in June 1827. The monks, led by Abbot Damaskinos, refused to surrender the monastery and gave a historic response to the Turkish demands, claiming they would either die fighting or be freed.

In modern times, the monastery was again destroyed by fire, and it was rebuilt in 1937 under the patronage of King George II, who also established its new wing. In December 1943, Nazi occupation forces looted the monastery and executed 16 people, including visitors, monks, and subordinates, and nine more monks were executed at a site called “Psilos Stavros.” The monastery was further rebuilt after World War II.

The monastery houses the miraculous sacred icon of the “Panagia Megalospilaiotissa,” which is attributed to the Evangelist Luke. According to historical accounts, the Evangelist Luke, after the death of Apostle Paul, worked in Achaia, possibly writing his Gospel and the “Acts of the Apostles” there. When he came to Achaia, he brought the sacred icon with him from Palestine, which was later hidden in the cave during Christian persecutions. It was rediscovered by Saint Euphronía in a miraculous way. The icon is a three-inch thick relief made of wax, mastic, and other materials, depicting the Virgin Mary holding the Christ child in her right hand and a Gospel in the other, with angels present around her. Despite multiple fires, the icon has been preserved and remains a revered object of veneration.

The Megalo Spileo Monastery stands not only as a spiritual center but also as a testament to the resilience and faith of the Greek Orthodox Church throughout the centuries.

The Holy Monastery of Panagia Makellaria of Kalavryta is located in mountainous Achaea, in the northwestern part of the Municipality of Kalavryta, south of the village of Lapnagon, on a bare and steep rock, about 30 kilometers from the city of Kalavryta. It celebrates twice a year, on September 14th, the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, and more festively on August 15th, the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (15th of August).

According to an inscription from 1805, located in the narthex of the Monastery’s chapel, its founder is said to be the famous general of Justinian, Belisarius, who built the Monastery in 532 AD, likely to atone for the massacre of rebels during the famous “Nika Riots” in Constantinople. The original Monastery, dedicated to the Virgin Mary and called “Panagia Lithariotissa” or “Lithostrotitissa,” was destroyed by the Turks in 1458. According to tradition, due to its exceptionally fortified position, the Monastery became a refuge for the residents of surrounding villages, who, led by the fighter Gianno, resisted the Turkish attacks for many days. Despite the brave and fierce resistance of the defenders, the Turks eventually managed to capture it. After the horrific massacre that followed, the monks’ cells were filled with blood. Since then, the Monastery has been known as “Makellaria.” In 1784, the Monastery was renovated by the Hieromonk Neophytos.

The Monastery played a significant role during the Greek Revolution of 1821. Several of its monks fought against the Ottoman Empire. Near the Monastery of Makellaria, the victorious Battle of Kafkariá was fought on August 26-27, 1827, where the advancing forces of Ibrahim Pasha were repelled.

The Monastery’s katholikon (main church) is located atop the rock where the Monastery is built. It is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It is a simple single-aisled church with a vaulted ceiling, lacking any particular architectural interest. Inside, there are two beautiful marble candle holders, made in 1813. Next to the katholikon is a newer but larger Byzantine-style church with a fine wooden carved iconostasis, dedicated to the Holy Trinity. In this church, the miraculous icon of “Panagia Makellariessa” is kept on a luxurious wooden shrine. There is also another small church within a cave, located slightly lower than the present-day Monastery, dedicated to the Transfiguration of Christ. There, water constantly drips from the rock above the Holy Altar, which the people believe to have healing power.

The Monastery’s most precious treasure is the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary and the jar with the miraculous oil, which was found inside the rock when the Monastery was rebuilt after its destruction by the Turks in 1458. This jar is still preserved to this day. Significant relics of the Monastery, such as gilded reliquaries, Byzantine icons, and silver-plated Holy Gospels, were stolen during a robbery in September 1980. Additionally, the Monastery houses carbine pistols, yataghans, and guns of the local leaders and fighters who participated in the famous Battle of Kafkariá, where they defeated Ibrahim’s troops in 1827, as well as some uniforms of the fighters from the 1821 revolution.

The Monastery took its current form after World War II when it was renovated again by Hieromonk Agathangelos and Anthimos. After being closed for a long period, it began operating again on August 1, 2011, with the installation of two new nuns, Sister Markella and Sister Synglitiki, who took it upon themselves to revitalize the Monastery.

In the western Peloponnese, in the beautiful valley of the Alpheus River, flourished the most renowned sanctuary of ancient Greece, dedicated to the father of the gods, Zeus. It extends across the southwestern slopes of the lush Kronios Hill, between the Alpheus and Cladeus rivers, which meet in this area. Welcome to Ancient Olympia!

Despite its isolated location near the western coast of the Peloponnese, Olympia became firmly established as the most important religious and athletic center in the Hellenic world. Here, the greatest competitions of ancient Greece, the Olympic Games, were held every four years in honor of Zeus, a tradition with pan-Hellenic significance that has endured from ancient times to the present day.

The origins of the worship and mythical contests held in Olympia date back to the depths of time. Local myths regarding the powerful king of the area, the famous Pelops, and the river god Alpheus, reveal the strong connections of the sanctuary with both the East and the West.

According to the UNESCO World Heritage site, there is no archaeological site in the world with such a direct connection to the present reality as Olympia. The ancient stadium of Olympia, where the Olympic Games were held in antiquity, and the monumental Temple of Zeus, the largest in the Peloponnese, are just a few of the site’s remarkable attractions.

Culture Touring the Archaeological Site of Olympia

The archaeological site of Olympia includes the Sanctuary of Zeus, with the temples and buildings directly related to worship, and various structures built around it, such as athletic facilities used for the preparation and execution of the Olympic Games, auxiliary buildings for utility and administration, as well as secular buildings.

The Altis, the sacred grove, occupies the central part, and within it develops the core of the sanctuary, with the temples, treasuries, and the most significant buildings of the area. It is separated from the surrounding area by a wall, which, by the end of the 4th century BC, had two gates on its western side and one to the south, while its eastern boundary was the Stoa of Echoes, which separated the sacred area from the stadium. During the Roman period, the wall was expanded, and two monumental propylaea were created on its western side.

In a prominent position within the sacred area stands the giant Temple of Zeus, and to the north, the older Temple of Hera. On the northern side was the Temple of Rhea-Cybele, dedicated to the mother of the gods, and behind it, at the foot of Kronios Hill, are the treasuries dedicated by Greek cities, primarily colonies. To their west stands the Nymphaeum, the magnificent waterworks dedicated to the sanctuary by Herodes Atticus.

Within the Altis, there was also the Pelopion, a tomb monument dedicated to the hero Pelops, the Prytaneion, which was the seat of the sanctuary officials, and the Philippieion, the elegant circular building dedicated by King Philip II of Macedon.

In ancient times, to the southeast of the Heraion (Temple of Hera), there was also the large altar of Zeus, a very important monument, but no traces remain, as it was formed by the accumulation of ashes and disintegrated when the sanctuary ceased to function. The remaining area within the wall was filled with altars, statues of gods and heroes, statues of Olympic victors, and dedications from prominent individuals and Greek cities, among which was the famous Nike of Paeonius, which you can admire at the Archaeological Museum of Olympia.

Outside the southern wall of the Altis, there is the Bouleuterion, and further south, the South Stoa, which served as the southernmost building of the wider sanctuary and the main entrance to the sanctuary from that side. In the western part of the site, there are buildings serving the sanctuary’s staff, athletes, and official visitors, separated from the Altis by the Sacred Way: the gymnasium and the palaestra, training areas, the workshop of Phidias, which was transformed into a basilica during the Early Christian period, the Greek baths with the swimming pool, the Roman baths, the Theekoleon (residence of the priests), the Leonidaion (a guesthouse for the officials), and the later Roman guesthouses.

To the east of the Altis stretches the stadium, where the Olympic Games took place. In antiquity, south of the stadium, there was also the hippodrome, of which no trace remains today because it was swept away by the Alpheus River. In the same area, there are architectural complexes of baths and villas, such as the famous villa built by Nero when he stayed in Olympia to participate in the Games.

Temple of Zeus

The magnificent Temple of Zeus was the most important building in the Altis in Ancient Olympia and occupied a prominent position in the center of the site. It was the largest temple in the Peloponnese and is considered the perfect expression, the “canon,” of Doric temple architecture. It was built by the Eleans in honor of Zeus, using spoils from their victorious wars against the cities of Triphylia.

Its construction began in 470 BC and was completed in 456 BC. This date is confirmed by an inscription of the Lacedaemonians, who, after their victory over the Athenians and their allies in the Battle of Tanagra (457 BC), dedicated a golden shield that was displayed beneath the central apex of the temple’s pediment. The architect of the temple was Libon of Elis, though the artist of the pediments remains unknown. The temple is oriented east-west and is peripteral, with six columns on the short sides and thirteen on the long sides (9×13). The height of the columns was 10.43 m, and their lower diameter was 2.25 m. The columns and walls were made of local shell limestone and covered with white marble concrete, while only the sculptural elements of the pediments, the roof tiles, and the lion-head water spouts were made of marble.

The temple consists of a pronaos, naos, and opisthodomos. Both the pronaos and the opisthodomos are distyle in antis, and a mosaic floor dating to the Hellenistic period with a depiction of Tritons is preserved in the pronaos. In front of the entrance to the pronaos, in a small square area paved with hexagonal marble slabs, the crowning of the Olympic victors took place. The naos is divided into three aisles by two rows of double columns, with seven Doric columns in each.

At the back of the naos was the gold and ivory statue of Zeus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It was made by Phidias around 430 BC and stood over 12 meters tall. The god was depicted seated on his throne, holding a scepter in his left hand and a winged Nike in his right. His bare body was made of ivory, while his robe and throne were made of gold, with reliefs of mythological scenes. After the abolition of the Olympic Games, the statue was moved to Constantinople, where it was destroyed by fire around 475 AD. Its form is known to us from depictions on ancient coins and from the description of the traveler Pausanias (5.11).

The temple had a rich sculptural decoration, an excellent example of the severe style. The eastern pediment depicts the chariot race between Pelops and Oenomaus, with Zeus at the center as the god of the sanctuary and judge of the race, while the western pediment depicts the Centauromachy, the battle between the Lapiths and the Centaurs, with Apollo at the center. The twelve metopes, located six above the entrance of the pronaos and opisthodomos, depict the labors of Heracles, the mythical son of Zeus. The external metopes of the temple’s peristyle were unadorned. Later, 21 gilded bronze shields, dedicated to the temple by the Roman consul Mummius in honor of Zeus, were hung on these metopes in commemoration of his victory over the Greeks at the Isthmus (146 BC).

The central apex of the eastern pediment featured a gilded Nike by the sculptor Paeonius, while one gilded cauldron was placed on each of the side apices. The temple was severely damaged when it was set on fire by order of Theodosius II in 426 AD, and later, in 522 and 551 AD, it collapsed during two major earthquakes.

The first excavation of the monument took place in 1829 by the French mission, and its full uncovering was completed during the German excavations. The sculptural decoration has been largely restored and is on display at the Archaeological Museum of Olympia. Fragments from the relief metopes are housed at the Louvre Museum since the 19th century, when they were brought there by the French mission of Maison.

Temple of Hera

The Temple of Hera is one of the earliest examples of monumental temple architecture in Greece. It was built at the northwest corner of the Altis sanctuary, on the southern slopes of Kronios Hill, where a strong retaining wall was constructed for its protection. It was dedicated to the sanctuary by the people of Skillounta, an ancient city in Elis.

Pausanias mentions that it was built about eight years after Oxylus took the throne of Elis, around 1096 BC. However, this dating does not align with the temple’s actual chronology, which is later. According to one view, the first temple of Hera was built around 650 BC, was small, Doric, and had only a cella and pronaos, and around 600 BC, the opisthodomos and peristyle were added to it. Today, the prevailing view is that the temple was constructed around 600 BC with a unified architectural plan. Over time, it underwent several alterations, and during the Roman period, it was transformed into a kind of museum, housing some of the most valuable works of the sanctuary, including the famous Hermes of Praxiteles.

The temple is characterized by its heavy proportions, as it has a particularly elongated floor plan and

the arrangement of its columns in the form of a peristyle with six columns on the short side and sixteen columns on the long side. Inside the temple stood a wooden statue of Hera, created by the artist Polycletus.

The most impressive feature of the Temple of Hera is its highly specialized plan, reflecting both the temple’s important role in ancient Olympia and its ties to the sanctuary.

At the southernmost tip of Attica, where the Attic sky meets the Aegean Sea, stands proudly the Temple of Poseidon, the mythical god of the sea. Perched on the steep cliffs of Cape Sounion, it will whisper to you its myths and history, from ancient times to the present day… Between myth and history.

It will tell you about the ship of King Menelaus, which stopped at Sounion on its way back from Troy, about the unfortunate Aegeus who fell into the sea, giving it his name, and about the people who built the temple from local marble to honor the sea god and protect the profits from the nearby mines of Lavrio.

The Secrets of the Architect The mysterious architect, likely the same one who built the Theseion in the Ancient Agora of Athens, adorned the temple with sculptures made of Parian marble depicting the labors of Theseus, as well as battles with Centaurs and Giants. Those that have survived are housed in the Lavrion Museum, while the impressive kouroi that once dominated the temple’s courtyard are now kept in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens.

Observe the Doric columns, count their flutes, and you will discover that they are fewer than those of other temples of the era (mid-5th century BC)—a peculiarity also found in other ancient coastal temples, such as the Temple of Aphaia in Aegina, among others.

What to Do? Combine your visit with a refreshing dip in the small beach located “in the shadow” of the Temple of Poseidon or in one of the neighboring beaches, in Legrena or Lavrio! Taste fresh fish and seafood in the tavernas of the area. Enjoy one of the most beautiful sunsets in Attica with your partner, with the ancient temple in the background and a view of the blue sea!

How to Get There: Sounion is located at the southernmost tip of Attica, at the end of the Athenian Riviera, 69 km from Athens. You can get there by intercity bus (KTEL) from Egypt Square (Victoria Metro station) or by car, driving along the coastal front of Athens and Attica (Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, Varkiza, Lagonissi, Anavyssos, Legrena, etc.), while enjoying the stunning view of the sea and the islands of the Saronic Gulf.

The Meteora monasteries are among the most important monuments in the world and have been protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which recognizes them as a “Protected Monument of Humanity.” The Meteora is Greece’s second most significant monastic center after Mount Athos. The first ascetics arrived here in the 11th century, but the Meteora monasteries flourished as a monastic center during the 13th and 14th centuries, as many locals embraced the monastic life.

In the past, the only way to access the Meteora monasteries was through climbing, symbolizing the struggle for isolation and the search for the divine. Today, it is considered an alternative activity, offering the best way to enjoy the uniqueness of the landscape. Most pilgrims and visitors now use the stone steps carved into the rocks. The walks along the trails are mesmerizing, with the massive rocks hiding the surrounding views. It is believed that these rocks were formed from transported materials, stones, and other debris carried by the waters of an ancient river that once flowed through the area. Over time, continuous erosion by winds and rains, along with other geological changes, has shaped the current appearance of the rocks.

Notable Monasteries of Meteora:

Great Meteoron Monastery
Located on the highest and largest rock, the Great Meteoron was founded around 1340 by Saint Athanasios the Meteorite (1302-1380). The monastery features several significant structures, including:

The tower (1520)

The current Museum of Folklore, showcasing ancient vessels and tools.

The ossuary.

The Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior (with the sanctuary dating back to 1388, the main church in 1545, and the narthex).

The refectory (1557), now the Museum of Relics.

The kitchen (1557), now the Museum of Folklore, with old copper, clay, and wooden kitchenware.

Monastery of St. Stephen
The founders of this monastery are considered to be Saints Antonios (early 15th century) and Philotheos (mid-16th century). The small church of St. Stephen, a single-aisle basilica, was built in 1350. The current church of St. Charalampos (1798) follows the Athonite style and is decorated with stunning wood-carved elements. The impressive refectory has been transformed into a modern museum displaying significant relics of the monastery, including manuscripts, post-Byzantine icons, gold-embroidered vestments, textiles, wood carvings, and intricate silverwork.

Monastery of Varlaam
According to tradition, the monastery was first inhabited by the ascetic Varlaam in the 14th century. The large church of the monastery, dedicated to All Saints, was built in 1542 in the Athonite style. The church was frescoed in 1548 by the Theban painter Franco Cattelan. In the late 16th and early 17th centuries, Varlaam housed the best-organized bibliographic workshop among the Meteora monasteries, as well as a specialized embroidery workshop.

Holy Trinity Monastery
Located on a distinctive, grand, and steep rock, the Holy Trinity Monastery was an organized monastic community as early as 1362, according to documents from the ruler Simeon Uresis-Palaiologos. The main church, built around 1476, is a small cross-shaped building with a central dome. The monastery’s Folk Museum houses a rich collection of ancient textiles, vessels, tools, and folk art items.

Rousanou Monastery
Founded in 1529 on the remains of earlier structures, the Monastery of Rousanou features the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior, built around 1530 in the Athonite style. The frescoes covering the church and the narthex are attributed to the Cretan School (likely by Georgios, a student of Theophanes of Crete). Although dedicated to the Transfiguration, the monastery particularly honors St. Barbara (December 4) at the small chapel dedicated to her.

Monastery of St. Nicholas Anapausas
Situated near the village of Kastraki, the Monastery of St. Nicholas Anapausas is a multi-story, elegant, and imposing structure on a narrow rock. The organized monastic life here dates back to the early 14th century. The frescoes in the church of St. Nicholas are the oldest signed works of the famous Cretan painter Theophanes, showcasing all the distinctive characteristics of the unique Cretan School art.

The Meteora monasteries not only stand as exceptional architectural marvels but are also integral to Greece’s spiritual and cultural heritage. Their awe-inspiring location among towering rock formations, combined with their rich history, make them a significant destination for both pilgrims and visitors from around the world.

At the foot of Mount Parnassus, in the striking natural landscape formed between two towering rocks, the Phocian cliffs, lies the Panhellenic sanctuary of Delphi and the most famous oracle of ancient Greece. Delphi was considered the omphalos (navel) of the Earth, where, according to mythology, two eagles sent by Zeus from the ends of the universe met to find the center of the world. For many centuries, it served as the spiritual and religious center and symbol of the unity of ancient Hellenism.

The history of Delphi dates back to prehistory and the myths of the ancient Greeks. According to tradition, there was originally a sanctuary dedicated to the female Earth goddess, with its guardian being the fearsome serpent Python. Apollo killed Python, and his own sanctuary was founded by Cretans who arrived at Kirra, the port of Delphi, accompanied by the god, who had transformed into a dolphin. This myth of Apollo’s domination survived in festive representations held at Delphi, such as the Septiria, the Dolphins, the Thargelia, the Theophania, and, of course, the famous Pythia, which were held to commemorate the god’s victory over Python and included musical competitions and athletic events.

The oldest findings in the Delphi area date back to the Neolithic period (4000 BC) and come from the Corycian Cave, a cave on Parnassus where the first worship rites took place. Inside the boundaries of the sanctuary, remnants of a Mycenaean settlement and cemetery were found. The traces of habitation are few and very fragmentary until the 8th century BC, a period during which the worship of Apollo definitively prevailed and the sanctuary and oracle began to develop. At the end of the 7th century BC, the first stone temples were built, one dedicated to Apollo and the other to Athena, who was also officially worshipped under the names “Pronaia” or “Pronoia” and had her own temple. According to literary sources and archaeological findings, Delphi also worshipped Artemis, Poseidon, Dionysus, Hermes, Zeus Polieus, Hygeia, and Eileithyia.

The sanctuary was connected with the institution of the Amphictyony, a federation of twelve tribes from Thessaly and Central Greece, which initially was a religious union but later acquired political significance. The Delphic Amphictyony had control over the property and operation of the sanctuary, as it appointed priests and other officials, always selecting them from the residents of Delphi. Under its protection and administration, in the 6th century BC, the sanctuary secured its autonomy against its contenders (First Sacred War), increased its Panhellenic religious and political influence, expanded in size, and reorganized the Pythia, the second most important Panhellenic games after the Olympic Games, which were held every four years.

The period from the 6th to the 4th century BC coincides with the golden age of the Delphic oracle. The oracles, which were considered the most reliable, were delivered by the Pythia, the priestess of the oracle, and interpreted by the priests of Apollo. Cities, rulers, and ordinary people rushed to consult the god and expressed their gratitude with splendid offerings, which gradually flooded the sanctuary. The fame of the oracle spread across the world, and its operations were believed to have shaped key historical events, such as the Deucalion flood, the Argonautic expedition, and the Trojan War. Its crucial role in the establishment of Greek colonies is also well documented.

However, the prestige and power of Delphi led to two more Sacred Wars, in the middle of the 5th and 4th centuries BC. In the 3rd century BC, a new political and military force emerged on the scene—the Aetolians, who expressed their dynamic presence in the sanctuary with various offerings. During the Roman rule (after 168 BC), Delphi was alternately favored and plundered by emperors, such as by Sulla in 86 BC.

The decline of the oracle began with the rise of the philosophical movement of rationalism in the 3rd century BC. However, the rituals of the oracle remained unchanged until the 2nd century AD, during the time of Hadrian. It was then that the traveler Pausanias visited the site, documenting in detail many remains of buildings, inscriptions, and sculptures. His thorough description greatly contributed to the reconstruction of the site. In 394 AD, a decree by the Byzantine emperor Theodosius I put an end to the oracle’s operation. With the rise of Christianity, Delphi became the seat of a bishopric but was abandoned in the early 7th century AD during the Slavic invasions. Gradually, the ancient sanctuary was covered and buried, and much later, a village called Kastri was built over its ruins. In modern times, the area became a destination for ancient history enthusiasts.

Archaeological research at Delphi began around 1860 by the Germans. In 1891, the French obtained approval from the Greek government to conduct systematic excavations, which began the so-called “Great Excavation” after the village of Kastri was removed. During this period, impressive findings were uncovered, including approximately 3,000 inscriptions revealing various aspects of ancient public life. Today, excavation and restoration activities continue at the two Delphi sanctuaries in collaboration between the Greek Archaeological Service and the French School. The only monument that had enough original material for almost complete restoration was the Athenian Treasury, which was restored by the French between 1903-1906 with funds from the Municipality of Athens. Other monuments that have been restored include the altar of the Chians, the Temple of Apollo, and the Tholos.

In modern times, Delphi became associated with the revival of the Delphic idea by the poet Angelos Sikelianos and his wife Eva, who presented two performances of ancient drama in 1927 and 1930, with the aim of creating a new spiritual “omphalos” of the earth.

Culture

Touring the Archaeological Site

The archaeological site of Delphi includes two sanctuaries, one dedicated to Apollo and the other to Athena, as well as other facilities, mainly athletic ones. Those arriving from Athens would first encounter the sanctuary of Athena Pronaia, i.e., the Athena located before the Temple of Apollo. Here, the famous Tholos stands, a circular building, along with the remains of three temples of the goddess, two of which were Doric and built on the same site, dating from the mid-7th century BC and 500 BC, and a newer, limestone temple built at the western end of the sanctuary after the earthquake of 373 BC.

Inside the sanctuary, there are altars dedicated to Zeus Polieus, Athena Ergane, Athena Zosteria, Eileithyia, and Hygeia, as well as remnants of a building attributed to the worship of the local heroes Phylacus and Autonous, who, in the form of giants, had repelled the Persian invasion of Delphi. There are also two treasures in the Doric and Aeolic style, with superstructures made of Parian marble. One of them, from the distant city of Massalia, preserved a characteristic capital with palm leaf motifs. The sanctuary also included a trophy commemorating the repulsion of the Persians, an outdoor statue of the emperor Hadrian, and a building known as “the house of the priests.”

Proceeding northwest, one would come across the gymnasium, an athletic training and educational center, with a palaestra and a complex of baths. The next stop was the Castalia spring, the sacred fountain of Delphi. Visitors would quench their thirst from their long journey and purify themselves before entering the oracle.

The central and most important area of the site always remained the sanctuary of Apollo. It was protected by a perimeter wall, with an entrance at its southeastern corner. From this point, visitors followed the Sacred Way, the main artery of the sanctuary, which led to the Temple of Apollo with its famous adyton, where the Pythia delivered the oracles. With the temple and the Sacred Way at its core, the sanctuary gradually grew and strengthened with monumental retaining walls. The sloping terrain of the site was organized into successive levels, framed by stoas (Attalus, Aetolians, Athenians), and accessible through corresponding gates in the perimeter. Among them, numerous offerings dedicated by Greek cities or wealthy individuals to mark various historical events or simply to express religious devotion to the god and his oracle can be found scattered throughout the site.

These works represent the technical skill and artistic progress of people from that era, from the depths of the East to the shores of the Mediterranean basin, and they also reflect the economic prosperity of the dedicants. They range from bronze or silver tripods (one of the symbols of the oracle) to complex, multi-figured sculptural groups made of marble or bronze. Among the architectural offerings, the treasuries, impressive and opulent, housed movable votives but primarily showcased the art of the dedicants’ homelands. The Sacred Way was lined with such offerings, placed densely along its length.

At the center of the sanctuary, on the large plateau formed by the great polygonal retaining wall, stood the magnificent Temple of Apollo. In front of its entrance, visitors could admire the impressive offerings primarily dedicated by wealthy individuals. Higher up, towards the northwest, stood the theater, where the dramatic and musical competitions of the Pythia took place, and even higher, outside the sanctuary’s perimeter, was the stadium, which hosted the athletic events.

Around and outside the two sanctuaries, the remains of the ancient settlement of Delphi are still visible. The settlement grew mainly during the Classical and Roman periods, and tombs from the corresponding cemeteries can also be found.
