Aitoliko is a small town and belongs to the municipal unit of Messolonghi, with a population of 7,345, located 10 kilometers northwest of Messolonghi. The town of Aitoliko is developed on a small island rooted in the water, roughly in the middle of the Aitoliko-Messolonghi lagoon. It is connected to the mainland to the east and west by two stone arched bridges, each about 300 meters long. Many writers and artists have been born in Aitoliko, such as Dionysios Leimonis, among others.
Ten kilometers from Messolonghi, a small island in the middle of the calm lagoon hosts Aitoliko, also known as the “Little Venice” of Greece, as it is often called. No, Aitoliko doesn’t have canals, but it is a special, picturesque place that offers visitors a combination of simplicity, beauty, and harmony.
Aitoliko is 250 km from Athens, making it an ideal destination for a weekend getaway, which could also include the nearby Messolonghi.
