Argos
Argos is a city in the Peloponnese, located in the regional unit of Argolis. It is the largest city in the region, with a population of 21,467 residents (2021 census). It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Argos serves as the center for the commercial and industrial activities of the region.
Argos is also the seat of the “Kallikratic” Municipality of Argos-Mycenae since 2021, which has a population of 39,994 residents. In terms of land area, it coincides with the former Argos Province, of which the city was also the seat. It is a municipal unit within the Municipality of Argos-Mycenae. The municipal community of Argos also includes the settlements of Akova, Kokla, and Timenio. The municipal unit of Argos covers an area of 138.13 square kilometers. It is located 11 kilometers from Nafplio, the capital of the region.
Argos is considered the oldest city in mainland Europe due to the existence of many archaeological monuments that date back to the Late Bronze Age, when it was one of the most important centers of the Mycenaean Civilization and one of the oldest in the Hellenic world. The city has been continuously inhabited, at least in the form of a village, for the past 7,000 years. The symbol of the city from ancient times is the wolf.
