Southern Evia hosts one of the most intriguing mysteries of archaeology: the famous Dragon Houses, named due to the massive scale of their construction. These remarkable structures, a total of 25, with their unique wall construction and unknown, even today, use by their creators, are scattered across the entire southern part of Evia.

Common characteristics of the Dragon Houses include the steep and panoramic locations where they were built, the construction details of the megalithic masonry and their entrances, and especially their roofing system, which follows the corbelled system: large, heavy slate slabs converge in layers between two opposing walls. Each layer of slabs protrudes slightly further than the one below it, forming a pyramidal roof. Other architectural elements found in most of these buildings are the monolithic doorposts and lintels, niches, and stone shelves preserved inside some of them, projecting from the walls. The dimensions of the Dragon Houses range from approximately 5 to 13 meters.

Numerous theories have been proposed regarding the use, purpose, construction, and dating of the Dragon Houses. Some believe they were ancient shrines dedicated to Zeus, Hera, or Heracles. Other theories suggest they might have been watchtowers, signal posts, or quarry workers’ shelters. However, their enormous size and construction technique remain a captivating and unsolved puzzle.

The Dragon House of Ochi

The most important and impressive of the enigmatic Dragon Houses of Evia is constructed at the top of Mount Ochi, above Karystos, at an altitude of 1,398 meters. It was built with large stones quarried from the surrounding area, which were carved and harmoniously fitted together without the use of any bonding material! The thickness of its walls is approximately 1.5 meters. The internal dimensions of the structure are nearly 5 x 10 meters. The entrance is notably trilithic, in the shape of a “P,” made of large columns. The slab above the entrance measures 4 meters in length, 2 meters in width, and 0.3 meters in thickness! This slab, weighing about 10 tons, how was it moved? How was it lifted to a height of 2 meters? What purpose did such a meticulously constructed building serve at an altitude of 1,400 meters in such a rugged area? The answers are well hidden in a foggy past, which many archaeologists and researchers have tried to uncover.

In 1959, excavations by Professor Nik. Moutsopoulos at the Dragon House of Ochi uncovered pottery, shards (one of which bears an inscription in an unknown script), and other objects that are now housed in the Archaeological Museum of Karystos.

Civilization

Hiking in the Dragon’s Footsteps

The ascent to the top is a life-changing experience. Mount Ochi is one of the most beautiful and pristine landscapes in Greece. The area has been included in the Natura 2000 program due to the unique beauty of the landscape and its significance as a wildlife refuge. Ochi hosts an exceptionally rare flora that has survived in isolation for millennia. As an ecosystem, it is considered one of the oldest on the planet. From the village of Mylos in Karystos, we head towards the mountain refuge at 1,100 meters altitude.

The air is fragrant with thyme and wild mountain tea, and a forest of towering, millennia-old chestnut trees in the area of “Kastanologgos” offers us wonderful views. From the refuge, a marked accessible trail begins that will lead us to the summit through the steep, bare mountainsides. A necessary stop is at the small chapel of Prophet Elias, carved into the rocks, to admire the unobstructed view of the surrounding area. With a breath, we face the ancient “Cyclopean” structure, the Dragon House of Ochi.

The Thermopylae are a coastal pass in Greece. The area is named after nearby hot springs and the narrow and difficult passages through which one could approach the region, the gates, which were the Eastern, Middle, and Western gates.

There were major festivals and sanctuaries in ancient Greece. At the Thermopylae, there was a sanctuary dedicated to the worship of Demeter. The name seems to come from the mythical hero Heracles, who fell into the waters of the springs to relieve himself from the pain caused by the poisoned tunic of Nessus, which had stuck to his body. Since then, fumes have risen from the springs.

The pass leads from Locris to Thessaly, between Mount Oeta and the Maliakos Gulf.

For the Ancient Greeks, this place was sacred. There was also a double spring dedicated to Persephoneā€”the Scyllian Springā€”at the foot of the gorge, next to the Middle Gate, the narrowest part of the Thermopylae.

The Thermopylae are mainly known for the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC, between the Greek and Persian armies.

The monument with the statue of Leonidas (2022).
In the time of Leonidas, in 480 BC, the pass was a narrow path (about 12 meters wide) below the hill, which the Greek soldiers tried to strategically use to block the overwhelming Persian army. Today, the pass of Thermopylae spans from 1.5 to 3 kilometers in width, due to deposits at the mouth of the Spercheios River.

The hot springs, from which the pass gets its name, still exist on the slopes of the hill.

Finally, as Konstantinos Kavafis states in the phrase “Honor to those who in their lives have set and guard the Thermopylae,” the word “Thermopylae” means faith in principles and values, high goals.

At the foot of Mount Parnassus, in the striking natural landscape formed between two towering rocks, the Phocian cliffs, lies the Panhellenic sanctuary of Delphi and the most famous oracle of ancient Greece. Delphi was considered the omphalos (navel) of the Earth, where, according to mythology, two eagles sent by Zeus from the ends of the universe met to find the center of the world. For many centuries, it served as the spiritual and religious center and symbol of the unity of ancient Hellenism.

The history of Delphi dates back to prehistory and the myths of the ancient Greeks. According to tradition, there was originally a sanctuary dedicated to the female Earth goddess, with its guardian being the fearsome serpent Python. Apollo killed Python, and his own sanctuary was founded by Cretans who arrived at Kirra, the port of Delphi, accompanied by the god, who had transformed into a dolphin. This myth of Apolloā€™s domination survived in festive representations held at Delphi, such as the Septiria, the Dolphins, the Thargelia, the Theophania, and, of course, the famous Pythia, which were held to commemorate the godā€™s victory over Python and included musical competitions and athletic events.

The oldest findings in the Delphi area date back to the Neolithic period (4000 BC) and come from the Corycian Cave, a cave on Parnassus where the first worship rites took place. Inside the boundaries of the sanctuary, remnants of a Mycenaean settlement and cemetery were found. The traces of habitation are few and very fragmentary until the 8th century BC, a period during which the worship of Apollo definitively prevailed and the sanctuary and oracle began to develop. At the end of the 7th century BC, the first stone temples were built, one dedicated to Apollo and the other to Athena, who was also officially worshipped under the names “Pronaia” or “Pronoia” and had her own temple. According to literary sources and archaeological findings, Delphi also worshipped Artemis, Poseidon, Dionysus, Hermes, Zeus Polieus, Hygeia, and Eileithyia.

The sanctuary was connected with the institution of the Amphictyony, a federation of twelve tribes from Thessaly and Central Greece, which initially was a religious union but later acquired political significance. The Delphic Amphictyony had control over the property and operation of the sanctuary, as it appointed priests and other officials, always selecting them from the residents of Delphi. Under its protection and administration, in the 6th century BC, the sanctuary secured its autonomy against its contenders (First Sacred War), increased its Panhellenic religious and political influence, expanded in size, and reorganized the Pythia, the second most important Panhellenic games after the Olympic Games, which were held every four years.

The period from the 6th to the 4th century BC coincides with the golden age of the Delphic oracle. The oracles, which were considered the most reliable, were delivered by the Pythia, the priestess of the oracle, and interpreted by the priests of Apollo. Cities, rulers, and ordinary people rushed to consult the god and expressed their gratitude with splendid offerings, which gradually flooded the sanctuary. The fame of the oracle spread across the world, and its operations were believed to have shaped key historical events, such as the Deucalion flood, the Argonautic expedition, and the Trojan War. Its crucial role in the establishment of Greek colonies is also well documented.

However, the prestige and power of Delphi led to two more Sacred Wars, in the middle of the 5th and 4th centuries BC. In the 3rd century BC, a new political and military force emerged on the sceneā€”the Aetolians, who expressed their dynamic presence in the sanctuary with various offerings. During the Roman rule (after 168 BC), Delphi was alternately favored and plundered by emperors, such as by Sulla in 86 BC.

The decline of the oracle began with the rise of the philosophical movement of rationalism in the 3rd century BC. However, the rituals of the oracle remained unchanged until the 2nd century AD, during the time of Hadrian. It was then that the traveler Pausanias visited the site, documenting in detail many remains of buildings, inscriptions, and sculptures. His thorough description greatly contributed to the reconstruction of the site. In 394 AD, a decree by the Byzantine emperor Theodosius I put an end to the oracleā€™s operation. With the rise of Christianity, Delphi became the seat of a bishopric but was abandoned in the early 7th century AD during the Slavic invasions. Gradually, the ancient sanctuary was covered and buried, and much later, a village called Kastri was built over its ruins. In modern times, the area became a destination for ancient history enthusiasts.

Archaeological research at Delphi began around 1860 by the Germans. In 1891, the French obtained approval from the Greek government to conduct systematic excavations, which began the so-called “Great Excavation” after the village of Kastri was removed. During this period, impressive findings were uncovered, including approximately 3,000 inscriptions revealing various aspects of ancient public life. Today, excavation and restoration activities continue at the two Delphi sanctuaries in collaboration between the Greek Archaeological Service and the French School. The only monument that had enough original material for almost complete restoration was the Athenian Treasury, which was restored by the French between 1903-1906 with funds from the Municipality of Athens. Other monuments that have been restored include the altar of the Chians, the Temple of Apollo, and the Tholos.

In modern times, Delphi became associated with the revival of the Delphic idea by the poet Angelos Sikelianos and his wife Eva, who presented two performances of ancient drama in 1927 and 1930, with the aim of creating a new spiritual “omphalos” of the earth.

Culture

Touring the Archaeological Site

The archaeological site of Delphi includes two sanctuaries, one dedicated to Apollo and the other to Athena, as well as other facilities, mainly athletic ones. Those arriving from Athens would first encounter the sanctuary of Athena Pronaia, i.e., the Athena located before the Temple of Apollo. Here, the famous Tholos stands, a circular building, along with the remains of three temples of the goddess, two of which were Doric and built on the same site, dating from the mid-7th century BC and 500 BC, and a newer, limestone temple built at the western end of the sanctuary after the earthquake of 373 BC.

Inside the sanctuary, there are altars dedicated to Zeus Polieus, Athena Ergane, Athena Zosteria, Eileithyia, and Hygeia, as well as remnants of a building attributed to the worship of the local heroes Phylacus and Autonous, who, in the form of giants, had repelled the Persian invasion of Delphi. There are also two treasures in the Doric and Aeolic style, with superstructures made of Parian marble. One of them, from the distant city of Massalia, preserved a characteristic capital with palm leaf motifs. The sanctuary also included a trophy commemorating the repulsion of the Persians, an outdoor statue of the emperor Hadrian, and a building known as “the house of the priests.”

Proceeding northwest, one would come across the gymnasium, an athletic training and educational center, with a palaestra and a complex of baths. The next stop was the Castalia spring, the sacred fountain of Delphi. Visitors would quench their thirst from their long journey and purify themselves before entering the oracle.

The central and most important area of the site always remained the sanctuary of Apollo. It was protected by a perimeter wall, with an entrance at its southeastern corner. From this point, visitors followed the Sacred Way, the main artery of the sanctuary, which led to the Temple of Apollo with its famous adyton, where the Pythia delivered the oracles. With the temple and the Sacred Way at its core, the sanctuary gradually grew and strengthened with monumental retaining walls. The sloping terrain of the site was organized into successive levels, framed by stoas (Attalus, Aetolians, Athenians), and accessible through corresponding gates in the perimeter. Among them, numerous offerings dedicated by Greek cities or wealthy individuals to mark various historical events or simply to express religious devotion to the god and his oracle can be found scattered throughout the site.

These works represent the technical skill and artistic progress of people from that era, from the depths of the East to the shores of the Mediterranean basin, and they also reflect the economic prosperity of the dedicants. They range from bronze or silver tripods (one of the symbols of the oracle) to complex, multi-figured sculptural groups made of marble or bronze. Among the architectural offerings, the treasuries, impressive and opulent, housed movable votives but primarily showcased the art of the dedicants’ homelands. The Sacred Way was lined with such offerings, placed densely along its length.

At the center of the sanctuary, on the large plateau formed by the great polygonal retaining wall, stood the magnificent Temple of Apollo. In front of its entrance, visitors could admire the impressive offerings primarily dedicated by wealthy individuals. Higher up, towards the northwest, stood the theater, where the dramatic and musical competitions of the Pythia took place, and even higher, outside the sanctuary’s perimeter, was the stadium, which hosted the athletic events.

Around and outside the two sanctuaries, the remains of the ancient settlement of Delphi are still visible. The settlement grew mainly during the Classical and Roman periods, and tombs from the corresponding cemeteries can also be found.

The Monastery of Hosios Loukas, the Hagia Sophia of Roumeli, is located in the municipality of Stiri, in the municipal unit of Distomo, in the municipality of Distomo-Dragonas-Antrikeras, in the regional unit of Boeotia, Central Greece. It is situated at an altitude of 430 meters on Mount Stiri. It is one of the most important monuments of the Middle Byzantine art and architecture and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, together with the other two surviving Middle Byzantine monasteries in Greece, Nea Moni and Dafni Monastery. However, Hosios Loukas is larger and differs from Dafni and Nea Moni as it is dedicated to a unique saint, Hosios Loukas, who lived as a hermit on Mount Stiri (July 29, 896 ā€“ February 7, 953).

The Monastery of Hosios Loukas is located on Mount Stiri, at the site where the ancient temple of Stiriitis Demeter once stood. It is surrounded by a plateau covered with an olive grove, in a landscape untouched by time, unspoiled by urbanization or any other activity, maintaining its authenticity. Information about the history of the monastery comes from the life of Hosios Loukas, a work by an anonymous author from 962, which “bears the stamp of history,” as historian G. Kremos noted when he first published it in 1874 in Phocica. The biography, written in great detail after the saint’s death, was penned by an anonymous monk who was deeply knowledgeable about the situation and events of the time, a highly capable theologian, and an excellent scholar. It provides indisputable information about the church and monastery and gives historical testimonies about the major invasions of the Slavs, Arabs, Saracens, Bulgarians, and others, as well as the liturgies of the Dormition and the Translation of the saint’s relics, sources considered reliable by archaeologists. According to these sources, the founder of monastic life at the monastery was Hosios Loukas himself, who lived there during the last seven years of his life (946ā€“953). He was born in Kastri, Phocis in 896, to parents who were refugees from Aegina. Early on, he embraced monasticism, and by the end of 910 or 911, he had become a monk in Athens. Later, he lived in various hermitages in Phocis and along the opposite Corinthian coast at Korfos in Corinthia. His movements were dictated by the threat posed by the Bulgarians of Symeon. In 946/947, he settled at the site of the present-day monastery and died in 953.

Hosios Loukas was a well-loved figure both among the local population and the officials of the Theme of Hellas, whose capital was Thebes. He carried out philanthropic and healing work and had the gift of prophecy. In 941, he had predicted the reconquest of Crete by General Nicephorus Phocas under Emperor Romanos II (961) with the prophetic words: “Romanos will conquer Crete.” These abilities and his posthumous fame contributed to the area’s pilgrimage significance. In fact, the general of the Theme of Crete financed the construction of a church during the saintā€™s lifetime in 946, the Church of Saint Barbara, which was completed after Hosios Loukas’s death. Hosios Loukas was buried on the floor of his cell, and in 955, monks built a cross-shaped structure around his tomb, along with the first cells of the monastic community.

There are varying accounts regarding the construction of a more magnificent church to house his relics. However, the Translation is generally placed around 1011, and the construction of the new katholikon (main church) is thought to have taken place when a certain Philotheos was abbot. By 1014, the monastery had flourished and owned two estates in Euboea, in Antikira and Saint Nicholas in Kampia, Boeotia. According to discussions suggesting that the monastery enjoyed imperial favor (either from Romanos II, Basil II, or Constantine IX Monomachos) due to its monumental architecture and rich decoration, the most plausible theory is the involvement of imperial workshops under Constantine IX, coinciding with a broader Renaissance of arts in the Byzantine Empire. Archaeologists disagree on the dating of the earlier buildings: Hadzidakis supports 1011 (under Basil II), while Stikas suggests 1042 (under Constantine IX).

After 1204 and the Frankish occupation of Greece, Latin monks inhabited the monastery, but during the Ottoman era, it returned to Greek hands. During the Ottoman period, after the Orlov Revolt in 1770, the monastery became a base for Andreas Verousis, who used it to gather supplies, treat the sick and wounded, hold Turkish prisoners, and prepare young men for the Greek War of Independence. It was a key base for his resistance efforts in the area. In 1780, after being invited by the voivode of Livadia to direct the local klephts, 3,000 Turks surrounded the monastery to surprise and capture him. Verousis, with his klephts and the monks, defended against the Turkish attacks for 12 days, barricaded in a tower of the monastery. Eventually, they managed to escape that night, with the help of monk Simeon Mastrogeorgis, without losing a single man. This enraged the Turks, who turned against the monastery, destroying it, beating the monks, stealing everything, and even shooting at the icons, while their leader committed suicide from the womenā€™s gallery of the church. Long-term heavy taxes were imposed on the monastery. In 1790, Verousis left the monastery when he began working with Lambros Katsonis.

Later, until around 1800, the monastery served as a base for klephts and was a site of frequent clashes, this time under the leadership of one of Verousis’s last men, Georgios Ioannis Sideris, also known as Karkaletsis.

During the Greek War of Independence, the monastery was the starting point of the revolution in Roumeli. In mid-March 1821, the bishop of Salona, IsaĆas Desphiniotis, together with Athanasios Diakos, Vasilis Bougros, and the Filiki Eteria member Zareifis, decided and planned the start of the revolution, swearing an oath on the Gospel. On the morning of March 27, after Orthros, IsaĆas officially declared the start of the Revolution, raising the revolutionary flag for Roumeli. The monks then courageously joined the battle, capturing a Turkish officer and other Turks, forcing them to pass under the sword as a sign of submission.

In June 1822, Elijah Mavromichalis and Nikitaras gathered at the monastery under the orders of Odysseas Androutsos to return to the Morea after defending Livadia. Greek forces also regrouped here after the battles of Livadia.

Under the threat of Droumali in 1822, most of the monks left the monastery. Only three remained to protect and maintain the necessary religious rites. During the summer, the Turks looted the monastery for eight days before setting fire to the guesthouses. The remaining monks could not defend the monastery. A year later, the Turks returned, completely burning it down, including the ancient church and many important elements of the monastery’s history. After the looting, a plague spread among the Turks, which was seen as a punishment and miracle of Hosios Loukas.

Generally, due to its location, the monastery became a frequent target of attacks and clashes but also a refuge for klephts, brigands, and revolutionaries. Its contribution was not limited to providing material support, primarily food, where it was most needed, to warriors and locals.

On August 23, 2023, during a fire, some buildings of the monastery were burned, and the katholikon was also threatened. Despite suffering from destruction and looting throughout the centuries, the monastery still preserves a rare architectural and decorative wealth. Restoration efforts began in 1938 by the Archaeological Service and the Archaeological Society and continue successfully to this day.

The Church of the Virgin Mary, the oldest in the complex, is the only one known to have been built in mainland Greece during the tenth century. It follows the architectural type of the complex four-columned cross-in-square church with a dome, characteristic of the architectural school of Constantinople. The church was expanded with a spacious narthex and a unique exo-narthex with an open portico and two enclosed rooms at the ends. During restoration work, an excellent fresco was discovered beneath the marble floor of the katholikon, once adorning the eastern wall of the southern exo-narthex, depicting the Archangel Michael appearing to Joshua before the fall of Jericho.

Just 80 km from Athens, the city of the sacred spring of Arethusa serves as the gateway to the entire island of Euboea. Its strategic geographic position has made it a crossroads of ideas and cultures since ancient times, a stronghold for conquerors of every era. Today, the cosmopolitan Chalcis ā€“ the administrative and commercial center of the island ā€“ is built on both sides of the Euripus Strait and is a popular destination for short getaways from the bustling Athens. The high cable-stayed bridge, an impressive modern structure, has greatly facilitated and expedited access to the city of Chalcis.

Famous throughout Greece for the tidal phenomenon of the water changing direction every six hours, Chalcis attracts thousands of visitors who flock to the old sliding bridge of Negroponte to observe this rare phenomenon. The next classic meeting point for locals and visitors is the beach. A beautifully designed pedestrian street, alive day and night thanks to the numerous cafƩs and restaurants lined along the quay.
