“The sea is sapphire and the sky seems to be burning, like an opalescent stone in the air. The sails are raised; a breeze blows as we head to the azure lands of the east. From the high bow, Zakynthos appears, small forests of olive trees, the rock of Ithaca, the bays, and the snowy peak of Lycaeus, while beyond, the flower-sprinkled hills of Arcadia.

No sound! I only hear the thud of the sails against the masts, the waves breaking against the side, and the happy laughter of girls on the stern. And when the sun burned in a magnificent sunset and sank in crimson into the depths of the sea, I finally stepped on the soil of Greece!”

KATAKOLO
Oscar Wilde
(poem by the Irish writer titled “Impression de voyage,” written as soon as he arrived in Katakolo in 1877)

The historical presence of Katakolo dates back to the early 19th century, after which it gradually began to evolve into an important commercial port for the area. Its status as a significant port continues to be maintained until today, now with a tourist character, as the hundreds of thousands of tourists visiting every year make Katakolo one of the largest and most important tourist ports in the country, as well as one of the main gateways for tourists to Greece.

Katakolo also serves as the port of Pyrgos, the capital of the Elis region, which is located 13 kilometers away. It has 511 residents, according to the 2021 census, with fishing being one of the main activities—particularly in the past and to some extent today.

Access to the village is possible not only by vehicle and public transport but also by recreational boat, as Katakolo has a marina on the northern side of the port.”

A wall, a creation of the demigod Heracles, awaits you to discover it.

An unknown cultural treasure, located near the city of Patras (35 km southwest), close to the village of Araxos, the “Walls of Dyme” (or Castle of Kalogrias) is the only fortified Mycenaean acropolis in Western Greece. Upon arriving at the archaeological site, visitors are in awe as they gaze upon the impenetrable walls, which, according to the myth, were built by Heracles to protect the “Dymaian Land” from the raiding attacks of the Eleans.

In reality, the structure dates back to the Mycenaean period, as evidenced by the cyclopean masonry, although the occupation of this fortified site spans from the Late Neolithic to the Venetian period. The walls of the castle were 300 meters long, 10 meters high, and 5 meters thick!

Following exemplary restoration and highlighting of the acropolis, the Walls of Dyme enchant anyone who chooses to wander and admire this masterpiece of Mycenaean architecture. Majestic towers, robust walls, monumental gates, and grand altars transport the visitor to ancient times. On the northeastern side, one can observe the curvature of the wall, which strategically positioned the defenders of the acropolis during attacks.

The traces of houses that were attached to the wall, providing additional protection for the inhabitants of the acropolis, are also visible. In the Mycenaean period, this acropolis served as the administrative center of the surrounding area. Acropolises like the Walls of Dyme inspired Homer’s dramatic descriptions in his epics.

A visit to the Walls of Dyme is undoubtedly an unforgettable experience that you shouldn’t miss during your trip to the wider region!

Located on the southwestern side of Kalavryta, just 5 kilometers from the historic town, the Holy Monastery of Agia Lavra stands as one of the region’s top attractions. A major national and religious pilgrimage site of paramount importance, it is also one of the oldest monasteries in Greek history.

Set in a majestic landscape, with Byzantine elements dominating the architecture, we are transported back in time to the era of the Byzantine Empire under Emperor Nikephoros Phokas, when the Athonite ascetic Eugenios founded the monastery, according to tradition. Despite the numerous destructions, fires, and pillages that marred its tumultuous history, the monastery rose again each time, even grander and more impressive.

The monastery’s history is forever tied to its immense contribution to the Greek War of Independence, as during the Ottoman rule it served as a center of national action.

Visitors can explore the monastery’s museum and relive its thousand-year history. The museum houses a stunning collection of treasures of incalculable national significance. Among the items on display are the sacred flag, weapons of the 1821 revolutionaries, the vestments and pastoral staff of Archbishop Germanos of Patras, the diamond-studded Gospel – a gift from Catherine the Great – the 1754 epitaph, the embroidered image of Saint George by “Kokona the Rologá”, significant religious objects, and a wealth of documents dating from 1688 to 1906.

Take a moment to rest under the ancient plane tree – a natural monument in itself – for reflection, emotion, and gratitude for this sacred Palladium of Orthodoxy. The Holy Monastery of Agia Lavra is not just a place of religious importance, but also a profound symbol of national heritage and resilience.

The Megalo Spileo Monastery is a historic and one of the most significant pilgrimage sites of Orthodoxy in Greece, located near Kalavryta. Situated ten kilometers northeast of Kalavryta, near the road connecting the National Road from Patras to Athens with Kalavryta, it is built into a large natural cave in the Helmos mountain range, above the steep gorge of the Vouraikos River, at an altitude of approximately 900 meters. It is also located close to the village of Kato Zachlorou, at a higher elevation. The monastery complex, a majestic structure with eight floors, blends harmoniously with the wild and impressive landscape of the area. The main church (Katholikon) of the monastery is carved into the rock, featuring a cross-shaped design and two narthexes. The main church contains murals from 1653, noteworthy marble mosaics on the floor, a wooden carved iconostasis, and other valuable artistic elements. The murals in the narthex date back to the early 19th century.

The monastery, considered the oldest in Greece, was founded in 362 AD by the Thessalonian monks, Symeon and Theodore. According to tradition, the two brothers saw separate visions while in Jerusalem, instructing them to travel to Achaia to find the sacred icon of the Virgin Mary, made of mastic and wax and painted by the Evangelist Luke. After several wanderings and revelatory dreams, they encountered a young shepherdess named Euphronía from the village of Galatá (Zachlorou), who led them to the cave where the sacred icon was found. The icon had been discovered by Euphronía through divine guidance and the direction of a goat from her flock that went to the cave for water from a spring there. This spring, later covered with marble, is known today as “The Maiden’s Spring,” a sacred site. The sacred icon was guarded by a fearsome dragon, which was struck by a lightning bolt when it attacked the monks attempting to clear the sacred space. The monks then constructed a small church and cells, with the help of the local people, who came to venerate the miraculous icon. Over time, the monastery became one of the most populous and prominent monastic communities and flourished greatly.

The monastery has faced numerous destructions due to fires, including in 840, 1400, 1640, and 1934, but the sacred icon was always miraculously preserved. Emperor Andronicus the Elder is said to have rebuilt the monastery in 1285 after a devastating fire. The monastery played a crucial role in the uprisings against the Turks, especially during the 1770 uprising, when the abbot of the monastery intervened to end a siege of Kalavryta, ensuring the safety of Turkish families. During the Greek War of Independence in 1821, the monastery was a symbol of Orthodoxy and resistance, never being captured despite several attacks, notably repelling the forces of Ibrahim Pasha in June 1827. The monks, led by Abbot Damaskinos, refused to surrender the monastery and gave a historic response to the Turkish demands, claiming they would either die fighting or be freed.

In modern times, the monastery was again destroyed by fire, and it was rebuilt in 1937 under the patronage of King George II, who also established its new wing. In December 1943, Nazi occupation forces looted the monastery and executed 16 people, including visitors, monks, and subordinates, and nine more monks were executed at a site called “Psilos Stavros.” The monastery was further rebuilt after World War II.

The monastery houses the miraculous sacred icon of the “Panagia Megalospilaiotissa,” which is attributed to the Evangelist Luke. According to historical accounts, the Evangelist Luke, after the death of Apostle Paul, worked in Achaia, possibly writing his Gospel and the “Acts of the Apostles” there. When he came to Achaia, he brought the sacred icon with him from Palestine, which was later hidden in the cave during Christian persecutions. It was rediscovered by Saint Euphronía in a miraculous way. The icon is a three-inch thick relief made of wax, mastic, and other materials, depicting the Virgin Mary holding the Christ child in her right hand and a Gospel in the other, with angels present around her. Despite multiple fires, the icon has been preserved and remains a revered object of veneration.

The Megalo Spileo Monastery stands not only as a spiritual center but also as a testament to the resilience and faith of the Greek Orthodox Church throughout the centuries.

The Holy Monastery of Panagia Makellaria of Kalavryta is located in mountainous Achaea, in the northwestern part of the Municipality of Kalavryta, south of the village of Lapnagon, on a bare and steep rock, about 30 kilometers from the city of Kalavryta. It celebrates twice a year, on September 14th, the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, and more festively on August 15th, the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (15th of August).

According to an inscription from 1805, located in the narthex of the Monastery’s chapel, its founder is said to be the famous general of Justinian, Belisarius, who built the Monastery in 532 AD, likely to atone for the massacre of rebels during the famous “Nika Riots” in Constantinople. The original Monastery, dedicated to the Virgin Mary and called “Panagia Lithariotissa” or “Lithostrotitissa,” was destroyed by the Turks in 1458. According to tradition, due to its exceptionally fortified position, the Monastery became a refuge for the residents of surrounding villages, who, led by the fighter Gianno, resisted the Turkish attacks for many days. Despite the brave and fierce resistance of the defenders, the Turks eventually managed to capture it. After the horrific massacre that followed, the monks’ cells were filled with blood. Since then, the Monastery has been known as “Makellaria.” In 1784, the Monastery was renovated by the Hieromonk Neophytos.

The Monastery played a significant role during the Greek Revolution of 1821. Several of its monks fought against the Ottoman Empire. Near the Monastery of Makellaria, the victorious Battle of Kafkariá was fought on August 26-27, 1827, where the advancing forces of Ibrahim Pasha were repelled.

The Monastery’s katholikon (main church) is located atop the rock where the Monastery is built. It is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It is a simple single-aisled church with a vaulted ceiling, lacking any particular architectural interest. Inside, there are two beautiful marble candle holders, made in 1813. Next to the katholikon is a newer but larger Byzantine-style church with a fine wooden carved iconostasis, dedicated to the Holy Trinity. In this church, the miraculous icon of “Panagia Makellariessa” is kept on a luxurious wooden shrine. There is also another small church within a cave, located slightly lower than the present-day Monastery, dedicated to the Transfiguration of Christ. There, water constantly drips from the rock above the Holy Altar, which the people believe to have healing power.

The Monastery’s most precious treasure is the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary and the jar with the miraculous oil, which was found inside the rock when the Monastery was rebuilt after its destruction by the Turks in 1458. This jar is still preserved to this day. Significant relics of the Monastery, such as gilded reliquaries, Byzantine icons, and silver-plated Holy Gospels, were stolen during a robbery in September 1980. Additionally, the Monastery houses carbine pistols, yataghans, and guns of the local leaders and fighters who participated in the famous Battle of Kafkariá, where they defeated Ibrahim’s troops in 1827, as well as some uniforms of the fighters from the 1821 revolution.

The Monastery took its current form after World War II when it was renovated again by Hieromonk Agathangelos and Anthimos. After being closed for a long period, it began operating again on August 1, 2011, with the installation of two new nuns, Sister Markella and Sister Synglitiki, who took it upon themselves to revitalize the Monastery.

In the western Peloponnese, in the beautiful valley of the Alpheus River, flourished the most renowned sanctuary of ancient Greece, dedicated to the father of the gods, Zeus. It extends across the southwestern slopes of the lush Kronios Hill, between the Alpheus and Cladeus rivers, which meet in this area. Welcome to Ancient Olympia!

Despite its isolated location near the western coast of the Peloponnese, Olympia became firmly established as the most important religious and athletic center in the Hellenic world. Here, the greatest competitions of ancient Greece, the Olympic Games, were held every four years in honor of Zeus, a tradition with pan-Hellenic significance that has endured from ancient times to the present day.

The origins of the worship and mythical contests held in Olympia date back to the depths of time. Local myths regarding the powerful king of the area, the famous Pelops, and the river god Alpheus, reveal the strong connections of the sanctuary with both the East and the West.

According to the UNESCO World Heritage site, there is no archaeological site in the world with such a direct connection to the present reality as Olympia. The ancient stadium of Olympia, where the Olympic Games were held in antiquity, and the monumental Temple of Zeus, the largest in the Peloponnese, are just a few of the site’s remarkable attractions.

Culture Touring the Archaeological Site of Olympia

The archaeological site of Olympia includes the Sanctuary of Zeus, with the temples and buildings directly related to worship, and various structures built around it, such as athletic facilities used for the preparation and execution of the Olympic Games, auxiliary buildings for utility and administration, as well as secular buildings.

The Altis, the sacred grove, occupies the central part, and within it develops the core of the sanctuary, with the temples, treasuries, and the most significant buildings of the area. It is separated from the surrounding area by a wall, which, by the end of the 4th century BC, had two gates on its western side and one to the south, while its eastern boundary was the Stoa of Echoes, which separated the sacred area from the stadium. During the Roman period, the wall was expanded, and two monumental propylaea were created on its western side.

In a prominent position within the sacred area stands the giant Temple of Zeus, and to the north, the older Temple of Hera. On the northern side was the Temple of Rhea-Cybele, dedicated to the mother of the gods, and behind it, at the foot of Kronios Hill, are the treasuries dedicated by Greek cities, primarily colonies. To their west stands the Nymphaeum, the magnificent waterworks dedicated to the sanctuary by Herodes Atticus.

Within the Altis, there was also the Pelopion, a tomb monument dedicated to the hero Pelops, the Prytaneion, which was the seat of the sanctuary officials, and the Philippieion, the elegant circular building dedicated by King Philip II of Macedon.

In ancient times, to the southeast of the Heraion (Temple of Hera), there was also the large altar of Zeus, a very important monument, but no traces remain, as it was formed by the accumulation of ashes and disintegrated when the sanctuary ceased to function. The remaining area within the wall was filled with altars, statues of gods and heroes, statues of Olympic victors, and dedications from prominent individuals and Greek cities, among which was the famous Nike of Paeonius, which you can admire at the Archaeological Museum of Olympia.

Outside the southern wall of the Altis, there is the Bouleuterion, and further south, the South Stoa, which served as the southernmost building of the wider sanctuary and the main entrance to the sanctuary from that side. In the western part of the site, there are buildings serving the sanctuary’s staff, athletes, and official visitors, separated from the Altis by the Sacred Way: the gymnasium and the palaestra, training areas, the workshop of Phidias, which was transformed into a basilica during the Early Christian period, the Greek baths with the swimming pool, the Roman baths, the Theekoleon (residence of the priests), the Leonidaion (a guesthouse for the officials), and the later Roman guesthouses.

To the east of the Altis stretches the stadium, where the Olympic Games took place. In antiquity, south of the stadium, there was also the hippodrome, of which no trace remains today because it was swept away by the Alpheus River. In the same area, there are architectural complexes of baths and villas, such as the famous villa built by Nero when he stayed in Olympia to participate in the Games.

Temple of Zeus

The magnificent Temple of Zeus was the most important building in the Altis in Ancient Olympia and occupied a prominent position in the center of the site. It was the largest temple in the Peloponnese and is considered the perfect expression, the “canon,” of Doric temple architecture. It was built by the Eleans in honor of Zeus, using spoils from their victorious wars against the cities of Triphylia.

Its construction began in 470 BC and was completed in 456 BC. This date is confirmed by an inscription of the Lacedaemonians, who, after their victory over the Athenians and their allies in the Battle of Tanagra (457 BC), dedicated a golden shield that was displayed beneath the central apex of the temple’s pediment. The architect of the temple was Libon of Elis, though the artist of the pediments remains unknown. The temple is oriented east-west and is peripteral, with six columns on the short sides and thirteen on the long sides (9×13). The height of the columns was 10.43 m, and their lower diameter was 2.25 m. The columns and walls were made of local shell limestone and covered with white marble concrete, while only the sculptural elements of the pediments, the roof tiles, and the lion-head water spouts were made of marble.

The temple consists of a pronaos, naos, and opisthodomos. Both the pronaos and the opisthodomos are distyle in antis, and a mosaic floor dating to the Hellenistic period with a depiction of Tritons is preserved in the pronaos. In front of the entrance to the pronaos, in a small square area paved with hexagonal marble slabs, the crowning of the Olympic victors took place. The naos is divided into three aisles by two rows of double columns, with seven Doric columns in each.

At the back of the naos was the gold and ivory statue of Zeus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It was made by Phidias around 430 BC and stood over 12 meters tall. The god was depicted seated on his throne, holding a scepter in his left hand and a winged Nike in his right. His bare body was made of ivory, while his robe and throne were made of gold, with reliefs of mythological scenes. After the abolition of the Olympic Games, the statue was moved to Constantinople, where it was destroyed by fire around 475 AD. Its form is known to us from depictions on ancient coins and from the description of the traveler Pausanias (5.11).

The temple had a rich sculptural decoration, an excellent example of the severe style. The eastern pediment depicts the chariot race between Pelops and Oenomaus, with Zeus at the center as the god of the sanctuary and judge of the race, while the western pediment depicts the Centauromachy, the battle between the Lapiths and the Centaurs, with Apollo at the center. The twelve metopes, located six above the entrance of the pronaos and opisthodomos, depict the labors of Heracles, the mythical son of Zeus. The external metopes of the temple’s peristyle were unadorned. Later, 21 gilded bronze shields, dedicated to the temple by the Roman consul Mummius in honor of Zeus, were hung on these metopes in commemoration of his victory over the Greeks at the Isthmus (146 BC).

The central apex of the eastern pediment featured a gilded Nike by the sculptor Paeonius, while one gilded cauldron was placed on each of the side apices. The temple was severely damaged when it was set on fire by order of Theodosius II in 426 AD, and later, in 522 and 551 AD, it collapsed during two major earthquakes.

The first excavation of the monument took place in 1829 by the French mission, and its full uncovering was completed during the German excavations. The sculptural decoration has been largely restored and is on display at the Archaeological Museum of Olympia. Fragments from the relief metopes are housed at the Louvre Museum since the 19th century, when they were brought there by the French mission of Maison.

Temple of Hera

The Temple of Hera is one of the earliest examples of monumental temple architecture in Greece. It was built at the northwest corner of the Altis sanctuary, on the southern slopes of Kronios Hill, where a strong retaining wall was constructed for its protection. It was dedicated to the sanctuary by the people of Skillounta, an ancient city in Elis.

Pausanias mentions that it was built about eight years after Oxylus took the throne of Elis, around 1096 BC. However, this dating does not align with the temple’s actual chronology, which is later. According to one view, the first temple of Hera was built around 650 BC, was small, Doric, and had only a cella and pronaos, and around 600 BC, the opisthodomos and peristyle were added to it. Today, the prevailing view is that the temple was constructed around 600 BC with a unified architectural plan. Over time, it underwent several alterations, and during the Roman period, it was transformed into a kind of museum, housing some of the most valuable works of the sanctuary, including the famous Hermes of Praxiteles.

The temple is characterized by its heavy proportions, as it has a particularly elongated floor plan and

the arrangement of its columns in the form of a peristyle with six columns on the short side and sixteen columns on the long side. Inside the temple stood a wooden statue of Hera, created by the artist Polycletus.

The most impressive feature of the Temple of Hera is its highly specialized plan, reflecting both the temple’s important role in ancient Olympia and its ties to the sanctuary.

The Capital of Carnival

Welcome to Patras – the city where entertainment, history, and culture create a wonderful destination for all ages and tastes! Discover all the things you didn’t know about the city by walking around. Start your tour from Saint Nicholas Street, the most famous street in Patras, which begins from the Upper Town and ends at the Saint Nicholas Pier. The 192 steps of the street (from the top, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the city) serve as a “boundary” between the modern center and the Old Town, which is built around the Castle.

Wander through the narrow alleys with impressive neoclassical buildings and old aristocratic country villas with colorful facades or walk along the fortress walls. Then, head up to the Castle to admire the parts that have been preserved (the main gate, the walls, the octagonal towers, and a small theater) and relax while enjoying a romantic sunset from the ramparts.

City Tour
A walk in the “Dasylio” (wooded hill), next to the fortress, will rejuvenate you! Climb to the top, where you’ll find the municipal refreshment stand, and enjoy your coffee with a panoramic view of the city, the port, and the bay. Patras is also famous for its lively squares, which are bustling with activity throughout the day. In the evening, this is where the pulse of nightlife beats! Take a stroll through Georgiou I Square, Olga Square, or Psila Alonia, admire their neoclassical buildings, or relax at one of the countless cafes, ouzeries, and restaurants!

Significant attractions in the city include the Church of Saint Andrew on the homonymous coastal street, a true architectural masterpiece with unique frescoes. The central dome, 46 meters high, can be seen even from the port!

The “Apollon” Municipal Theater at Georgiou Square, a miniature of Milan’s La Scala, is bound to impress you! Designed in 1872 by Chiller, it was one of the first opera theaters in Europe, and today it houses the Patras Municipal and Regional Theater (DIPETHE Patras). Don’t miss visiting the Roman Odeon behind the 25th March Square in the Upper Town, which is even older than the Herodes Atticus Odeon. Also, discover interesting museums in the city, such as the New Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Press, and more. If you’re a romantic soul, look for the Lighthouse (a faithful replica of the old one), the symbol of Patras, across from the Church of Saint Andrew.

As you leave the city behind, visit the ACHAIA CLAUSS winery. Situated on a lush hill 8 km southeast of the city center, its facilities stand out as one of the most important tourist attractions in the area. Tour the stone buildings, discover where the large oak carved barrels of mavrodaphne wine from a century ago are stored, and learn what enchanted Bavarian Gustave Klaus to decide to make his wine here!

Don’t miss a visit to the “Dymaios Wall,” the only fortified Mycenaean acropolis in Western Greece. Discover an unknown archaeological treasure just 35 km from the city of Patras. Wander through the impregnable wall, said to have been built by the mythological hero Hercules, and admire the remarkable masonry with imposing towers and monumental gates!

The Megalo Spileo is a historic monastery in Kalavryta, one of the most important pilgrimage sites of Orthodoxy in Greece.

The Monastery is located ten kilometers northeast of Kalavryta, near the road that connects the National Road Patras – Athens with Kalavryta. It is built at the opening of a large natural cave (from which it gets its name) in the Chelmos mountain range, above the steep gorge of the Vouraikos River, at an altitude of about 900 meters, and is also in close proximity to and higher than the village of Kato Zachlorou. Perfectly harmonized with the rugged and impressive landscape of the area, the eight-story complex of the Monastery captivates even the most indifferent visitor. The main church of the Monastery, carved into the rock, is a cross-shaped temple with two narthexes. The main church has frescoes from 1653, remarkable marble mosaics on the floor, a wooden carved iconostasis, etc., while the frescoes in the narthex date from the early 19th century.

The Monastery, considered the oldest in Greece, was built in 362 AD by the Thessalonian monk brothers, Symeon and Theodore. While the two brothers were in Jerusalem, each separately saw a vision with the command to go to Achaia and find the sacred icon of the Virgin Mary made of mastic and wax, painted by Evangelist Luke. After several wanderings and revealing dreams, they met a shepherd girl named Euphronia from the village of Galata (Zachlorou) in 362 AD. Euphronia led them to the cave where the sought-after sacred icon was found, which she herself had discovered through “Divine Providence,” following the guidance of a goat from her flock, which went to the cave to drink from the spring located there. This spring, now made of marble, is known as the “Spring of the Maiden” and is a source of holy water. Euphronia is honored as a Saint. According to tradition, the sacred icon was found next to the spring, guarded by a terrible dragon, which was killed by a lightning strike when it attacked the two monks who were trying to clear the sacred site of dense vegetation. The two monks then built a small temple and several small cells with the help of the faithful who gathered to venerate the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary. Many of the faithful remained for spiritual exercises. Over time, the Monastery became one of the most important monastic centers and reached great prosperity and prestige. The original church remained until 1934, when it was destroyed by a fire. The Monastery’s properties included real estate in Constantinople, Smyrna, Thessalonica, and large estates in Achaia and Ilia, called “Metochia.” The Monastery was destroyed at least four times by fires, in 840, 1400, 1640, and 1934, but the Sacred Icon was always miraculously preserved. Emperor Andronicus the Elder is said to have rebuilt the monastery in 1285 after a devastating fire.

Megalo Spileo played a significant role in the uprisings against the Turks. In 1770, Metropolitan Parthenios of Patras, leading armed forces, besieged Kalavryta. At that time, the abbot of the Monastery of Megalo Spileo, with other monks and carrying the cross, went to Kalavryta, where, through his mediation, the siege was lifted, and the Turkish families were safely escorted out. Thanks to this act of the abbot, when the revolution was later suppressed and Albanian hordes ravaged the Peloponnese, the Monastery managed to survive and save many Greek lives.

During the Greek War of Independence in 1821, the Monastery became a beacon of Orthodoxy and Hellenism and a center of resistance against the occupiers. Despite many attacks, it was never conquered. A notable event was the repulsion of Ibrahim Pasha’s advance in June 1827. On June 21, Ottoman commanders Sami Efendi and Sehnecip Efendi, under Ibrahim’s orders, called on the monks to surrender the Monastery, stating among other things:

“Abbot, you should consider this movement of the Romans, it will not find success in its head, so think carefully, as you are wise, that you will not find a good end and you will be defeated.”

On June 22, the historic response of the then abbot Damaskinos to the Turks was: “… it is impossible for us to surrender as we are sworn to our faith; we will either be freed or die fighting, and according to our oath, the sacred oath of our Homeland cannot be broken. … if you come here to fight and defeat us, it is no great harm, for you will defeat priests, but if you are defeated… it will be your disgrace, and then the Greeks will be encouraged and pursue you everywhere…”

Indeed, Ibrahim’s army, which had the support of some Greek traitors under Neneko, was forced to withdraw after a hard battle on June 24, thanks to the brave defense from the Petmezai and Fotako. The Monastery, where many non-combatants had sought refuge, was not captured by the Turks, who suffered many casualties, unlike the Greek forces. After the victorious outcome of the battle, the invaders withdrew from the wider Kalavryta region.

In 1895, George Paraskeyopoulos, now Saint Gervasius of Patras, attended the School of the Monastery.

In modern times, it was once again destroyed by fire and rebuilt in 1937, under the patronage of King George II, who also laid the foundation for its new wing. In December 1943, Nazi occupation forces looted the Monastery and executed 16 people, visitors, subordinates, and monks. Another nine monks were executed at the site “Psilos Stavros” (High Cross). The remaining cells from the 1934 fire were also burned. After the war, new buildings were erected.

Among the sacred relics of the Monastery, the miraculous sacred icon of the “Virgin of Megalo Spileo” holds a prominent position. It is the work of Evangelist Luke (one of the three that he created and are preserved to this day). According to reliable historical testimonies, Evangelist Luke, after the death of the Apostle Paul, acted, like Apostle Andrew, in Achaia, where he likely wrote his magnificent Gospel and the masterpiece “Acts of the Apostles.” When he came to Achaia, he brought with him from Palestine this specific sacred icon (blessed by the Virgin herself), which he later gifted to the first Christians. During the persecutions, these Christians sought refuge in the Cave, where they hid the icon. When they died or were killed for Christ, the icon remained in the Cave until it was discovered in a miraculous way by Saint Euphronia. The icon is bas-relief, three centimeters thick, and made from wax, mastic, and other materials. It bears a colored robe with golden embroidery. Due to the many fires, it has darkened over time. The Virgin’s body is turned to the right, with her head inclined toward her Son, holding him in her right hand (Deixiotopousa), while with her left hand she lightly holds her Son’s left palm, and with her right hand, He holds the Gospel. On the right and left of the wax icon, angels are depicted with fear. In the four corners of the icon, on the right, Seraphim with six wings, and on the left, multi-eyed Cherubim.
